  • Smoke Smoke and more smoke

Hi everyone. My first post on the site so hope you all can help.
I bought a 92 surf about 2 months ago after checking out the site. Not a reason to buy one but helped me make my mind up.
Its been going well but had some smoke on start up which i dealt with by blocking the EGR pipe with the ball bearing, fitting new glowplugs and last week changing the fuel filter and using a fuel treatment. Seemed to be working well.
This week however its been lumpy when starting and has to run a couple of minutes until it will tickover but has been spewing out vast amounts of smoke.
Looks serious to me. I spoke to a diesel specialist and he seems to think that I could be looking at fuel pump problems. I know its hard to say without a proper look but any ideas. And amounts of cash to spend?
    I thought maybe injectors? ( I wish)
    Help

Hi and welcome, being a recent newbie surfer myself, i have found the forums very helpful but it didn't stop my cylinder head from being blown into outer space. Is it overheating when you drive it?
        What colour smoke?

Welcome. Where were the glowplugs from, and how long did it alter the
smoke for? How much injector cleaner did you pop in the tank? Do you wait
for the beep before starting her up? Are you putting any form of oil in the
tank? What colour is the smoke?

By the sounds of it, (it was yours with the missing stat?), it was screwed
well before anything you did. The beep is merely reminding that the glowplugs
                    are well heated and ready.

Wow, so many questions. Glowplugs from roughtrax. See im learning. Was good for a few weeks but still a little smoke so went on to do the filter. Put the whole fuel conditioner in the filter and topped up with diesel. Did what it said on the tin. Or was that ronseal? Anyway, starts easy but struggles to tick over. Not using any oil in the tank, only the diesel variety.

You'd be damned unlucky if you managed to crack one of the Stevo jobs.
Should be nigh on indestructible when you get it back.
