  • Rear window / relay problem NEW fault

    Dear All,

I have recently developed a fault on my rear window which I have not been able to fix even with all the expertise I have found in the forums, can anyone help??

    Symptom:-

The window would not operatate with the key or switch so I have done the following:-

Switched the live and ground cables to the motor (effectively swapping the up and down relays) and the window went down when I used the key or dash switch, but not up, so I determined that I had switched the fault. From this I concluded that the down relay on the ECU was faulty.

I removed the ECU and swapped the down relay for the rear window wiper relay and re-fitted it. On trying the window I still had the original fault!!!

I have checked the other things suggested in the forums such as the wiper to no avail.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

    Matt,

Not sure if I can help you as electrics is my weak area. It may help others assist you if you fill in your profile with details of your Surf (2nd or 3rd Gen? year? 2.4L or 3.0L? etc).

There are other members who live in Plymouth, one I know is in Tavistock and I am from Callington (Luckett to be precise).

Have you established wether the window is actually trying to go up but will not due to resistance/weight or weak motor?
Laugh!!! I nearly bought my own beer.

Can you here the relays clicking even if the window isn't working.

I had one like this recently, in the end I binned the lot, got two relays and bases from RS and rewired the whole thing.

Its better IMHO as there is no window/lock/ignition overrides. it just goes up and down, and the inside switch works without needed the ignition on.

I can hear both relays clicking when I activate the key or the switch. I dont believe that there is a problem with the window runners or the motor as I can make the window go up and down by switching the wiring to the motor and using the up relay to power the window down.

I have put a meter across the motor feed and dont get any voltage when the down relay is activated so I can only prsume there is a problem between the relay and the motor.

Someone has mentioned checking the child lock on the rear door, I wasnt aware that there was one!!!!!!!

Presumably, the only logical explanation is that there's a break in the wire from the down relay to the motor.

I have spent many happy hours looking at mine trying to work out what's wrong with it and whilst I am still none the wiser (my relay clicks but the window doesn't go up), there are an awful lot of very exposed wires that hang out the bottom of the truck so I would have thought damage and/or corrosion is inevitable.
