Tools for turbo

Can anybody tel me the name of the tool that that fits on here. I think it maybe a special tool but i thought I would ask just on the off chance that it isnt. The nut I want to remove is the compressor wheel retaining nut pictured below.

Not a clue, you might be lucky if you spoke to one of the Turbo shops like Turbo technics or you might be lucky if you try a search on the web.

Sorry can't be more help.

You are brave though, I'd certainly be interested in how you get on. You might want to write an article on how you do the rebuild cos I'm sure there are a few people here who will have to do the same job at some point.

Have you managed to source the parts to do a rebuild - seals, bearings etc?.

I've had my turbo apart twice now. I used a tool called a vice-grip. The nut has a reverse thread on it so you may have been tightening it like i did at first. Hope that helped!

Not so brave as I might seem. I'm a marine engineer so overhauling turbos is second nature to me, but I'm more used to rather larger turbos with a big box of special tools next to them. Wil endeavour to write a wee article on the CT 20 once I have finished it.

The parts are all available from Turbo technics, who also do over sized and under sized bearing. I'm hoping it dont come to that but it is pretty shot.

it looks like a double hex socket some sockets r only single hex but britool make double hex on all there sokets

Sussed the left hand thread bit out its quite normal. Wasnt realy ready to attack with vice grips yet, its not a 16 point socket. Cheers for all the help suggestions guys.

Well after getting it apart it was worse than I thought. The shaft is worn quiet badly so the nice people at Turbotechnics are coming to pick it up this afternoon. Also with reference to rebuilkding your own turbo something I didnt think about was that, because you have to take the compressor wheel off to strip it needs balancing once rebuilt. With this in mind I wont bother with the write up. But if any one else has to take theres off I might be able to give you tips on accessing the various bolts. It only took me 45mins to get so it aint as daunting as it may seem.

Didn't think of the balancing bit. Suppose this makes doing a rebuild a bit more daunting. I don't supposed the shaft can be balanced separate to the turbo, i.e. you can do all the grunt work yourself and get Turbo Technics to do the balancing, might save a bit of the cost.

I've never even stripped a turbo myself so what I am saying might be complete c**p but worth asking I think.

Unfortunately not andy. The compressor whell is not keyed onto the shaft so there is no means of ensuring it goes back on in the same place. Will give details on costs as and when I find out. Dont know if this i a viable option for all as it obviously means rhe beast will be off the road for a few days or so. Will post on the time scales involved as well.

I had to replace my turbo back in 2001 and I used turbo technics then, they had it picked up the day after I called them and had a recon. CT20 on my door 3 days later. Which is ****** good considering it usually takes ages to get anything mailed up here. No problems with it since very quite well balanced turbo. Only problem I had at that time was purchasing the new turbo to manifold and turbo to exhaust gaskets I had to eventually 'pretend' to the toyota dealer in Inverness that it was for a CT20 on a Landcruiser.

Well I just heard back from Turbotechnics and my turbo is shot, which I new anyway but seems like they did a indepth inspection cause they even found a crack in the wastegate housing. The cost of a reconditioned turbo is 299 + vat which I think is a good deal. For anyone who is interested I spoke to a guy called Giles at turbotechnics and he was very helpful. They picked the turbo up the same day I rang them, They've had it a day and got back to me and its should be with me in the next few days. Good old fashioned service.
