Had a new timing belt and Rad fitted.......Have spent today fitting new pipes and jubilee clips....to replace all the knackered ones the nice mechanic deemed to refit rather than replace. Have finally tracked down all the leaks(I hope) and stopped the water lose and overheating.......only problem is she now puts out thick white smoke on tick over and at very low revs...this clears when you put your foot down......Any ideas please it is making my head hurt.

Is it an earlyish 2.4 and how does the smoke smell? I think we all know where I'm headed on this one but one of the more mechanically minded people will be along in a minute to come up with a better answer.

Anyway, there could be some other perfectly rational explanation, especially if the trained monkeys have been at it.

It is possible on other dervs that the pump timing can be out a touch and inject too much deisel into the swirl chamber. If this is possible with the hilux pump, then it is more then likely just unburnt fuel. There is no reason why the head should go just because of what you have done so far? What comes around goes around!!

White smoke
Clouds of it then clearing.Judging where the cracks are I would rule out condensation. The pressure in the top hose I think was Like tapping into cylinders 1and2 between the inlet valves.Sorry for being sarcastic chaps Ive had a bad day.I need a new HEAD.Cannot complain she's being a damn good work horse and will get the attention she needs.

It's a 2.4td and if memory serves it's a 93...on a K plate anyhow.
I had the timing belt done because it had reached 100,000 miles and it seemed like the thing to do....and the rad had developed a few pin prick holes along the top....after a year of putting Araldite over them once a month, I thought it time to splash out on a replacemaent part.
It is smoke as far as I am concerned...doesn't leave a moisture patch if you hold your hand in it...and is slightly "Sweet" smelling as best as I can describe it.
The header tank is full and has been every time I've looked at it in the 5 years I've had the vehicle. The top hose is not rigid, but does have fluid in it.
I don't think it is a cracked head...the previous owner had the head replaced just before I bought it...also it does not overheat....well not before the new rad and not now I've done all the clips and new rad hoses....and I suspect overheating was down to lack of water in the system......It certainly stopped doing it when I topped the system up.
It's just this sudden white smoke thing that has me scratchin my head.
