Have a good turbo from a 2.4 2LT_E.
Question- will this fit a 2.8(3L).

I have heard of it being done. You will basically need the intake system from a 2LT, the head is the same plus you will need the exhaust front pipe.

If you Turbo the 2.8 change the oil cooler so you can use the better oil filter that the Surfs have.Don't know about part numbers or filter brands you have over there but here an Aussie 2.8 uses a Z9 filter and the Surfs a Z334. These are Ryco brand filters.

i Turbocharged a 88 hilux 3L using a ct-20 a few years back wasnt to much work and was[B] well worth the effort I have a write up on the job over here on a kiwi 4x4 forum somewhere i will try to find and post link if your interested.
