Turbo Problems

I have a 2.4 k reg surf recently I have noticed an intermitent fan blowing whistling type noise from the engine in the area of the turbo on removing the large black rubber hose which connects the turbo to the air filter I found I could take hold of the centre of the turbo fan and move it up and down by about 2 - 3 mm
does this mean the turbo is shot
can you repair a turbo yourself?

its pretty specialised to repair them i think which involves balancing etc

Most turbos have a slight movement on the shafts shouldnt be exessive though most of them run hydraulic floating bearings so the play gets taken up when you get oil pressure. Have you any oil in the boost pipes a litte is ok but should not be puddles of it.

they are turbo specialist a new turbo for mine came to £450 with a full waranty...

check the hoses on the high pressure side.
