£5,000 bill to replace cylinder head, please anyone help!!
Without going through all the posts, has anyone supplied a like for like invoice. If not I've got one for the labour involved in putting on a new head and one for the head itself from Stevo. Labour is ten times less than these poor b******s paid.
Bet the VAT & TAX man loves these Type of (SHARKS) Garages
There's always a Payback !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You just can't see it Comin
If its of any help the Act is there to help consumers dealing with businesses as in the eyes of the law they are disadvantaged in negotiating a contract with a business.
There are 'Implied terms' in the act that may go some way to helping:-
Section 14 implies a term into a contract for the supply of a service, where the supplier is acting the course of business and where the time for the service to be carried out is not fixed by the contract, but is left to be fixed in a manner agreed by the parties or by a course of dealing, that the supplier will carry out the service within a reasonable time
Section 15 implies a term into a contract for the supply of a service where consideration (payment) for the service is not determined by the contract, but is left to be determined in amanner agreed by the parties or a course of dealings, that the party contracting with the supplier will pay a reasonable charge.
Please note that I am not a lawyer (I work in procurement), but have been recently studying legal aspects in Purchasing & Supply and contract law. The above is taken from my text books. BUT you are covered by these acts as your statutory rights as a consumer when dealing with any business, trade or shops.
From what others on here have indicated I would suggest that this garage has not carried out the work in a reasonable time or for a reasonable charge, but as I say I am not a lawyer, but would suggest getting legal advice soonest.
I really recomend trading standards. I have dealt with them twice. Once on behalf of a group I'm in, and once on my own behalf.
On one occasion they told me exactly what to write in a letter to scare a settlement out of the supplier. In the other occasion they agreed that I'd been cheated but said that the technicalities were not on my side and I'd have to let it go. but both times they were helpful.
Its a crying shame that a garage like that can rip people off like that, You really gotta be carefull, I was quoted £1,800 for a fuel pump rebuild by a place in fareham and all it took was 3-4 goes of injector cleaner to sort it,
The sob's are everywhere, Hope you come out on top!! Ian

4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...
Had my new head fitted in a day with Stevo, he also fitted a new water pump and looked at a couple of other things too, whole thing cost me £1200 and that was January 06, happy to email the invoice if needed.
Just an extra to add, I visited Stevo a couple of times after about various things and he didn't even charge me for that. Nice bloke, good mechanic, the surf has been in the French Alps since and runs smooth and sweet.
I have only just seen this thread. The group has helped me no end so it is time to put something back. I am a Solicitor (not one of the worst people like Estate agents).
As I understand it you have been overcharged by at least £3000-£3500. I rebuilt my own engine recently and it probably took 20 hours outside on the flat with the manual on CD and sub zero temperatures. (I know madness, but it runs well now.)
It will be a small claim, but you need to give them the opportunity to put it right first. Have they given the car back? Have you contacted trading standards? They can be very helpful as many have already pointed out. I would highlight the fact that not only have you been overcharged, but they have not carried out this job with reasonable skill and dilligence.
Let me know how far you have got and the present stat of play. Whereabouts are you?
I will obviously do my best to help. If you can let me have tel. number or email address so that I can speak to you privately this may help.
BTW anyone who remembers my tales of woe the Surf is running well.
Thanks so much for any help you can give, they have now released the vehicle
and we have sent a recorded delivery letter stating that we paid under protest purely to get the vehicle back and that we feel we have been overcharged and are looking for £1800 refund and that we have at least 10 copies of invoices for cylinder head replacement all off which are 50% of the £4900 bill we received. We have given them a 10 day deadline to get in touch with a response. My e-mail is kate_e_miller@hotmail.com if you want to contact me directly. We are in East Sussex, near Battle.

just read this thread although disgusted in these half bit haynes manual garages i had similar problem in germany when head went on me '' unfortunatly for me the AA arranged a toyota dealer to do my head , after a week in garage it came back '' surprise surprise in same state , toyota said they did head gasket but now they reckon the head is cracked '' no $$$$ '' i knew what the fault was but they inisisted . anyway they charged me 8oo quid and wanted another 2000 to complete the job '' cut a long story short i took car back and had to pay em for the job , holiday ruined , flight home and car repatriated .
well in the end i did job myself '' new head 400 complete , gasket set 50 quid
labour charge nil , my total hours spent was my own at weekend , result engine ran sweet now for over 20,000k .
you just gotta be more street wise with these thiefs.
Hi soo sorry to hear about you problems hope you get it sorted . It is garages like that one that give the whole trade a bad name .I don't know how they can justify that price I have fitted entire new engines for a lot less
