  • Fuel pump adjustment

I have heard mention of the "spill valve" being adjusted incrementally anticlockwise to reduce the dreaded black cloud effect

I've blocked off the EGR, opened up the air intake now I am keen to give this mysterious little Spill Valve a tweak backwards and see if I can get rid of a bit of black smoke.

I am not really fussed about economy it is the smoke that concerns me ( and the greenies )
If anyone can point me towards this little beast I would be very happy
Pictures are easy to read.....now that is a hint Tony N

it isnt usually a good idea to mess with a diesel pump, there is a spill meter that connects to the pump which should be used for this, i would get the injectors tested because they are more likely to be your problem

I have already replaced the injectors and still have the dreaded black smoke on take-off, I am aware that a little black smoke is normal but mine is pretty heavy.

then i would take it to a diesel specialist and have the pump timing checked, they can connect a spill guage and test it properly, or it could need something replacing inside the pump, a diesel pump is actually set up properly on special equipment not on the motor, if you eliminate this first and its still the same i would check the turbo, other than that it could start to get expensive as it could be one or more of the cylinders has low compression and not burning the fuel correctly, either through a leaking valve, piston rings worn or stuck, or wear in the bore itself

Hey Simon, how much did it cost to replace the injectors? Looking at doing mine once the turbo is sorted and did you replace over recon because of cost or what?

          Cheers

I replaced them with "new" ones.
I believe that they are recons anyway, the guy assured me that they are as good as new, they only have to replace the tips anyway.

They are pretty easy to replace
Give me a call on (09)4822392 and I'll let you know where I got them and how much $$$$.
My maintenance folder is out in my truck at the moment and in case you have missed the last few days, it is still pi$$ing down and I don't fancy getting wet right now.

If you have any worries about it I could come and give you a hand.
            Cheers
