Chrome Bumper Removal

Does anyone know for sure what the law says about removing the rusty, rotten, horrible, half chrome half holed rear bumper off of my Surf. I have seen examples of off-roaders that have tubular type rear bumpers on them but I am unsure as to their roadworthyness. (MOT due shortly).
I have asked on this forum before if any one knows of someone who can supply stainless steel replacements for the chrome ones, but no luck. If anyone has done this and is proud of the results, could you please post some pictures so I can get an idea how radical it will look.
i noticed that the new Warriors from the opposition come with tubular rear ends.......... wonder how easy it would be to graft one onto a Surf.

So many jobs......so little money and time......big ideas etc. etc.

My rear bumper got wrecked last year . Sumo could get me one imported but I decided to leave the whole thing off to show the towbar in its full glory ( or see wot you will hit if you get to close) . I have got a rear 3" tube from a Warrior I tried to fit a couple of weeks ago , trouble is it is Stainless Steel and is a bu**er to drill and cut so I gave up . As for the law , many motors round here just about have wings and doors on so a missing bumper wont matter . MOT only says no sharp edges or protrusions that can harm pedestrions . Seen bumper mounts with T shirts taped to them for MOT before , and pass .

can you post pics of your rotten bumpers? we would like to see them. I have not seen one as bad as you describe. Has it been in the sea or something?
Try Roughtrax for replacements. I understand that the hilux pickup tubular bars will go on your truck if you want to replace them but Stainless tubular? Big money if you find some.

you say you have a Warrior tubular, what like was it for size when you offered it up to the back end. I have the capabilities to weld and drill stainless at work. If it was just a case of modifying brackets and such I reckon I might go for one. How bad does the Surf look when you removed the bumper. Judging by the condition my bumper is in, I don`t think I am looking forward to removing it.

phoebelala, I will try and get some pictures posted before the weekend (it still gets dark early up here in NE Scotland). The climate up here requires a lot more salt on the roads than you get in a Bu***r K**g. This is probably the reason that I am reluctant to just throw on replacement chrome caps at £140 for a pair, knowing that it will probably happen again.

To let you understand, I am not the type of person that washes my car every Sunday.

Mine is a 1st Gen (the classic) , so a little different then the 2nd Gen . Once you drill the mount brackets off they look OK as if they where made with no bumper like a pick up .

The Warrior tube is the correct width so thats why I wanted to fit it . The brackets were totaly wrong and needed to be cut completly off and new ones fabbed . I still have it and may have another go once I have fitted my engine .
I may build a tube one with 1/4 panel 'buffers' and paint it black like the Marlin 4 Crawler ones.
The stainless one is at the workshop so I need to get it out and offer it up and take a piccy for you to see wot you think . I like it myself .

I have a similar rear end issue!Orrible aint it?A while back,a roving plod from Elgin,momentarily distracted from my unusual wielding techniques,informed me that as long as the additions to the bumpa areas were not hazardous to other road users,anything goes.i.e.no sharp bits stickin oot,not wider than the mirrors etc.Thinking of using some oversized scaff with end caps masel!but that crudy arse end must go!anyone know of a surfwise garage/mech in the plymouth/devon/cornwall area?just moved here,just got my !st surf ssr-x 2.4TD manual.cracked head replaced under warranty.lovin it!wnt to change sterio,seems a real pain to do tho!so much to do,so little etc...

Flying in the face of popular belief ,the Japs have weather everybit as bad and often worse than ours, they just don't bother with the salt. Has your truk been in Scotland for long??

the wind blew so hard it sucked water off the ground

not so sure the cable car ride over the active volcanoe was such a hot idea but a ride i will never forget
