      Time to resurrect this thread.

After a winter of driving with no heater I decided it's time to tackle replacing the heater matrix.
I have stripped down the lower dash as shown in the picture.
Next question is where exactly is this heater rad located? Is it behind the white plastic cover or the grey part to the left or both?
The picture of the replacement rad would suggest it sits sideways.

        Replacing heater matrix

On and on we go taking the whole dash to bits. I have now removed all of the top dash for better access.

From this next picture you can see the top of the radiator and the tubes disappearing towards the bulkhead. It looks to be in good condition but I suspect the bottom is a different story if only I could get to it.

Now I have no idea how to extract the rad from the heater compartment as it is completely enclosed in it.

I am now at the point where I wished I hadn't started.

If you havn't allready done so then you will have to remove the blower fan section first, then the aircon section (which means disconnecting air con pipesfrom engine side) then remove the entire section with the heater matrix. There is no other way to get it out as the box has screws, clips etc at the back which are impossible to remove otherwise. Once out you will easily see what to remove to split the upper and lower secions if necessary. Be prepared for all the seals to fall apart during the process.

Once you have it out you may not need to split the box if everything else is ok. Remove the screws and clips that clamp the pipes to the box and the heater matrix can then be slid upwards to remove. It may take a bit of effort to do this. If the new matrix does not come with the section of pipe that is joined with a clip you will need to remove the old one and fit to the new with a new o-ring. I have pics of the Air Con unit here.

If you need any info about the other sections i should be able to help.

              Heater matrix change

Well after much frustration I finally got the heater section out.
The blower and a/c section came out together. Didn't have much a/c gas before, certainly none left now!
Took the matrix out of its nest hole and it appears in good condition. However it is leaking from between the fins in the top corner.
Not sure whether to try and get it repaired or buy a replacement.

Not looking forward to putting it all back together again either!!

              Time for a pint.

Just got the rad back. Decided to have it recored. £85 +vat
A saving of over £30 on the total cost of a Roughtrax recon unit.
Looks like new again and has a 12 month warranty although I hope I never have to take it out again.

Now all I have to do is put it all back together.

                  --------------------------

                  All done.
Made lots of notes and took loads of pics. It wasn't as bad as first thought.
                  And everything works!

                    Heater Matrix R&R

All I can say is WOW! Thanks for the pictures of your job. I had mine in the shop a few weeks back after I suffered a misting problem of my own. They also installed a block heater, but could not get my heater to act up again despite running it for 3 hours. So I got my truck back, but yesterday it again fogged up the windshield even though it hadn`t done that for a few weeks. Could someone give me a rough idea of how long it would take me to do it myself?

Is it possible to remove the bottom housing of the aircon box with it in situ, are there any clips hidden around the back?

No, there's screws and clips that are impossible to get at.

No...I never use the recirculate option. It's always set on fresh air intake.
