Timing Belt

Hi guys,

I need your help.

I was driving home tonight, and the light for my T-Belt came on. I have called the garage and asked them to order me one etc ... but he didnt know if i could continue to drive it or not.

Basically it might be a light telling me that it needs replacing - i.e. a 5 year warning thing. Or it might be telling me that the timing belt has gone. Apparently it depends on the model and he isnt sure (he isnt a Hilux specialist).

I wanted to look in the manual - but i cant find it. Can anyone help ?

I live in the middle of nowhere, and without my car i cant get to work, but if the light is to tell me the belt has almost gone - if it does go, i could wreck the engine ... which would then cost me oodles and i cant afford it.

My car is a 2.4 Turbo - and a diesel.

So it wont wreck the engine if i continue to drive it ? The guy said he should get the belt and fit the car in for the work maybe Thurs / Fri - but i need to drive about £20 miles in the meantime. Are you 100% positive the light is just a reminder ?

A quick search of the forum would reveal that this has been asked, and answered many, many, many times before





























..... and yes, its just a reminder, scheduled to light up at 100,000Kms
It will need to be reset after the belt has been changed, you can find out easily how to so so by searching previous posts.

It's o.k. to drive it, just get the belt changed ASAP!

Yes it a light to say belt needs changing, should be on at 100,000kms or around 60,000 miles. If your not reading that mileage it may have been replaced previously and reset. But for peace of mind its worth doing now and make a note of the mileage so you know when its due next time.
If the belt had snapped you probably wouldn't be driving anywhere.

I just thought i would share my woes. As per my initial post i took the car into a local garage to get the timing belt done. They quoted £200.

Two days later my car is still there !!! They apparently had to remove the air con unit which required getting someone out to 'plug' the unit so the poisonous gasses didnt escape. They are taking forever, and they cant even guarantee it will be ready by tonight.

I dread to think how much this is going to cost - and i sure as hell wont be using the garage again.

Unfortunately it wasnt written down. They only told me verbally.

Is it right that they would have to remove the air con ??? I thought this job could be done at home - providing you have the right equipment. So have they messed it up ?

I'm just doing my timing belt - there is no need to remove the aircon. Move it to one side a bit, maybe, but not remove it.

Really - so the guys doing the work dont know what they are doing !!!

It can be done without releasing the air con gass, just remove the bolts for the compressor and move it to one side. Then remove the bash plate to get to the bottom of the rad to drain it and remove hoses. The rad is the only thing they need to remove to gain access to the timing belt. pluss the fan and belts of course.
The job can be done with the rad in place, it's just easier to have it out of the way, and saves damage too.
