Yup you're right Jim.... The manual gearbox fitted to all diesel Surfs from the mid-'80's to 1999 is a R150X but pre-'91 cars with the 2LT engine have a different clutch, flywheel, and bellhousing to the later 2LT-E and 1KZ-TE engines.
The thing that makes the 3000cc engined cars more economical than the 2.4's isnt the engine. Almost all the 2.4's are fitted with 4.87:1 final drive ratio, the 3 litre is usually 4.30:1

The lower ratio is due to the power produced through the 3000 unit I'm assuming, so, if that's the case, if I fit a 3000 in to my 2.4, The acceleration should be pretty ruddy good yah???? So I want a 3.0td unit for a J reg 92 then when the Cylinder head blows I'll just swap the lot? What do you think?? I have a 2LT-E with the 4.875 ratio diffs. Will there be any problems if I change to 4.3 ratio.Planning a few long trips and would like better economy and lower engine revs.
My gear box is R151F with the following -
1 - 4.31
2 - 2.32
3 - 1.52
4 - 1.1
5 - 0.83

I'm not worried about changing everything to accomodate, I understand that through past experience, I was informed by a Jaguar specialist that I couldn't put a V12 in to a model T ford, so I did. But, what concerns me, is MPG on my everyday runner. I do like the Idea of better fuel economy, which I won't have if I chuck a 3.0td under the bonnet without changing the ratio. Why is life so complicated??? Now I'm gonna have to think of an alternative solution,or am I?The chickens are stealing my sanity
