Oil Change Idiot?

Hi

Just done my first ever oil & filter change, but now have a nagging dread that I've drained out the transmission oil instead of the engine oil. Then leaving me with a car with too much engine oil and no transmission oil.

Here are the pics I took.

number two is the place where i think I SHOULD have drained it from

looks that way. Just check the oils and fill the ATF oil through the dipstick
Tranny fluid has a reddish tinge to it, not the blackish colour of old oil from the engine sump.

Thanks Gizmo - a check of the relevant dipsticks confirm my stupidity. To make things worse the thread on the bung for the transmission fluid reservoir has gone and can't be tightend the whole way, or removed. So what little fluid is left is slowly leaking out onto the drive - nice. I think I feel a pain in my wallet coming on.

What a tool.

Think it's time to hand in my socket set and Haynes manual to the relevant authoroties.

you will need about 5 liters of ATF fluid
when you refill it sit on the drive and move the stick through all the gears
then check it

dirve about for a bit then check it again

hope you get the plug fixed

(in this post i sound like i know what i'm talking about, when in fact i had mine done by a DAF enginer who explanied everything 15 times before i got it)

Thanks Cellone. Think I'm going to cut my losses, fill up with transmission fluid, check the level and drive it down to the garage where I should have taken it in the first place and get him to sort the mess out!

EVS where in West Yorks are you? I'm in Horsforth, leeds. Have socket set will travel, but i can't sort out a cross threaded drain plug.

If you have put another 7 litres of oil in the engine without draining the old stuff then don't start the engine till you have drained some out or you can do a lot of damage.

I would have thought that it would be apparant that the wrong oil was changed, when the engine oil ****ed everywhere on undoing the oil filter.

PS I nearly undid the ATF bung when I did my third service. Over confidence was the probelem that time.

Never tried it myself, but i'm pretty sure that wouldn't happen...at least not on a 3.0 as the filter is higher than the sump

unless you leave the o ring from the old filter stuck to the side of the block when you fit the new one, so the engine pumps all its oil out all over the place....

Erm, agreed!

Either drain it out and chuck half back in, or go buy some new stuff and stick that in!

I'm in Bradford - it's the cross thread that's the problem (so far). Thanks for the offer though mate.

I wish it had in a crazy way - at least I would have known soemthing had gone wrong!

Will do. Is that coz the crank can airiate the oil ? I read that the pump can't draw up airiated oil as well so oil doesn't get to the right parts thus causing damage. Is that right?

Thanks for your help everyone, think I'll leave the cars to mechanics and stick to computer programming from now on!

If The Engine Has Too Much Oil It Can Hydraulic As It Has No Where To Go Quick Enough Can Cause Immense Damage And Mess... Also Can Cause Many Oil Seals And Rings To Give Up The Ghost After You Realised You Got Double The Amount Of Oil You Should Have....

Don't feel like too much of a plonker.
I did a similar thing with HER car, a Mitsi RVR.
I had a look under the front and thought that looks like a sump plug........undo.....put bucket under.....out wooooooshes all this thin red stuff.
WTF is that me thinks.
Open another beer, I think this is where the problem lay , and drain the engine oil into another bucket. She by now is a little curious as to where all the buckets are disapperaing to.
How to get the ATF back into the box ???????
Down the dipstick tube slowly with a funnel.
Checked level after it had all settled.
Had more beer and then realised that I could not road test it.
Dad pops down for a beer so I nabbed him before we got into it and said go give this a thrash up the road.
All is good now and I'll not be doing that again
