Goes into 4WD on its own?

I have a Hreg 2.4 manual surf on the way down to Dorset at the bank holiday it kept going into 4WD on its own. I could hear the relay click and then juddering and lots of other noise. disconnected the relay and had no problems for the rest of the trip. Anyone else had this problem.

guess you should check all wires and switches associated with 4wd system for a short
not sure what the obvious place to start with is though

Have unplugged the switch on the gearstick and its ok at the moment but i am not holding my breath.

guess that switch is b&ggered then?
