my 1991 series II has lost the gas in the aircon unit which gas does it use 134a or the older gas?

Think you will find that you will have to get it converted to the newer gas due to environmental concerns.

Easily done , just get it to an air con specialist . they will change the gas and the valves all for around £70 , got mine done last year at a place in Kempston near Bedford, Bedfordshire.

My '94 Surf has a yellow sticker under where the bonnet strut stows that says "R134a" so I assume that was the time when the gas was being chnaged at manufacture.

Unless you know yours has been changed, i would assume it is the older type and you will need to change both the gas and possibly some components. (Unless you live in Southampton where I think there are reports of someone still offering to maintain the older environmentally damaging type).
