    can you take the sump off a 2.4td surf without taking out the engine?

      You need to drop the front diff out and unbolt the steering idler so that you can pull it forward a bit, then unbolt the engine mountings, jck up the engine on the crankshaft pulley or better still lift it with a crane.

      Then unbolt the sump and pull it out from the rear.

        i forgot to tell you it has had a 4" body lift?

            Dosn't matter, the engine/front diff don't move when body lifting.

              yes you can.the way i did it was i took the bolts out of the diff and the cross member and let the diff drop down a few inches,disconnected the steering linkages and shock and let them hang down,took all the bolts out of the sump,dropped it down a few inches then disconnected the pick up pipe, then pulled the sump out.you dont need to lift the engine at all if you do it this way.
