Towing Weight

Does anyone have a rough idea what the max towing weight (gross) is for a 2.4 surf?

If I remember right the Aussies have it pegged at 1.5 tonne. I think I've heard it mentioned in this country at 2.5 tonne. Your best bet would be to ask the company who fit the tow bar, the general rule of thumb is approx 85% kerbweight of your vehicle, with 100% for experianced towers.

Also check out the towing thread in the basement, as Marky has loaded that with very useful information.

Cheers Chaps managed to tow three aplacas and an antique horse box with the brake on (Naaaa Idiot) for about 170 miles up hill and down dale across Ireland. I did think it felt a tad underpowered but leaving the brake on the trailer will have that effect

The 4Runner figures given on Morr's link are wrong.
I have in front of me a Toyota (UK) 4Runner brochure from June 1995.
The towing capacity (with a braked trailer) is 2200 kg or 4849 lbs

Interestingly, on my tow bar it says max UK towing weight 2200 kg, max manufacturers towing weight 2430 kg.
I've towed 3000kg with mine, but it made the clutch slip a bit, although it went well on the motorway

A lot of towbars give the MAX load that the tow-ball etc can handle.

this is what i dont get about the towing rules
surely you are breaking the law if you tow the reccomended 2200kg as it is more than 100% of the vehicles weight?

Kerb weight 2718kg
Gross weight 3230kg
Max Towing Cap. 3500kg

I don't understand the current laws about towing either, hope i don't get pulled up while i'm towing.
