as for surface of the head, the area above pot 1 (frontmost cylinder is no 1?) is fine, above 2 3 and 4 however are very black and pitted, no cracks though - whats up?

BUT seriously we got the trusty woodworkers try square out and scraped at the face of pot 2 to see if was coked or pitted and pitted it was, badly. Upon further scrutiny which took 10 whole seconds we noted that the head has cracked between the valves on all cyclinders bar no.1 which is in fine fettle and that is a good thing.
Does this head gasket make any sense to any of ye. The oval water channels on the block (marked 'x' on the gasket) and the corresponding ones on the head ..... were blocked by the head gasket in other words there wasnt a corresponding hole cut out in the gasket.
Also at the spots marked 'y' on the gasket the holes in the head and block were much bigger than the 5 ml hole in the gasket.
You can see the brown marks where the coolant has left deposits on the gasket as it met a dead end.
Looks like the head gasket for a starlet. Just kidding. Is very strange. Maybe the wrong gasket. That would explain all the build up in those channels we were looking at today!

Marky are you thinkin the same as i'm thinkin - stevo only sees busted heads so....
what do his newly fitted gaskets look like, thats what i want to know.
Derek yeh that explains the almost sealed water channel where the coolant had nowhere to go. Im no engineer but this seems fargin riculous, theres definitely multiple conspiracies out there determined to bring me n my surf down......but it wont work, its gonna rise from the ashes like a phoenix and its gonna be better than ever it was and then i'm gonna sell the phucker hehehehehe
Some of the channels are blocked off for a reason as far as i know. STEVO hasnt been on for a while i think he may have gone away.
The reason 2.4 heads go is a deffinate design problem as the waterways are so close to the head face with very little tolerence.
Me & Steve are looking at splitting a head to prove this point.
The reason for the smaller holes in the gasket are usually to restrict the water in the block from flowing out to quick, the larger chamber holds the water for a bit to let it absorb heat, and then it flows out, its just a flow regulator.
Every gasket I've seen looks like that.

I agree . Some holes in block/head are casting holes and not for coolant flow . Most engines are like this.

As far as I can remember mine was the same when it was stripped down, new genuine gasket was exactly the same. I did have some pics of both old and new gasket but can't find them
