  • Smoke and Tapping noise

    Hi,
Not so long ago I had a new head fitted using the original cams and valves etc. Since having this done I have noticed a light tapping noise coming from the top end of the engine. This tap is above the normal diesel engine clatter; it appears more when the engine is put under load, such as going up hill.
Also just recently I have noticed increasing amounts of bluish smoke on start up. This clears after the initial start up. The smoke also appears if the engine is left on tick over for a while then revved up. Anyone got any ideas what the cause could be.
I am soon to put the vehicle in for service at a different garage to the one that fitted the head. I am going to get them to check the valve clearances. Can some one tell me what they should be for the 2.4td so that I can ensure that they do them correctly?
    Thanks

Could be the timing is one tooth out or a shim has moved.

The smoke is quite likely due to worn or incorectly seated valve stem seals.
As the engine stands the oil will work it's way down the valve stem into the combustion chamber - hence when you start up the smoke is at it's worst.
The tapping sound is most likely an incorrectly set tappet/cam follower - again a common fault following a head change.

Yes, that is what I was thinking it might be. Do you know what the correct clearences are?
