I have a 1989 2.8L diesel hilux, my starter has been checked and the tech said everything was fine, flywheel is good, but some mornings the bendex does not engage all the way and it grinds when you turn it over the first or second try- once warm it starts no probs. Also I have been having occasional pulsing in the electronic relay (back left of the engine compartment) anyone know what I am dealing with....Also glow plugs decided not to work for a week and now they are working again....hhmmm I'm stuck...

The last two are probably related, the preheater relay is over the left had side of the engine bay (from sitting in the truck) its probably stuck or sticking, easist to just preplace it.
As for the starter, if its OK, it should work, sounds like its getting jammed if your sure all the teeth are OK on the flywheel and bendix. Maybe its got wet and is freezing over night?4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...

thanks for that, the relay that I had pulsing was on the left when you are facing the motor from the from - -it just say 'electronic relay' I will replace this and perhaps the glow plug relay and hope that clears some of the issues.
As for the starter I am still stumped, I will take it off again and take a closer look at everything, I am dreading replacing the ring on the flywheel.
