starting probs

Hi,

I have 2.4tdi surf normally starts with half a turn of the key - but after leaving her on the drive for a couple of days takes a little longer ? ( couple mins).
The engine is turning but no spark (or whatever diesels do) to ignite.
The batteries are new. Plenty smoke comes out when it does start eventually in the morning .
After that its great all day, starts at half a turn.


Only started happening (ie taking longer to start) in last few weeks. Nothings been changed.

Any advise would be appreciated.

I would check that your glow plug fuse hasn't blown. Diesels will start without them but will smoke and run rough until warmed up.

The glow plugs are powered via a common buzz bar. It might be worth checking for anything that may have chafed and could be causing a short circuit.

I've had a look at the 80A glow fuse, and its not fused.

are you leaving the glow plugs on long enough before staring?

As da slug man says they should have pre-heaters on for cold
weather.
I turn the ignition on so all the dash lights are up,leave it
to you get that irritating noise then start her up,always
starts 1st time unlike a petrol engines.

Another possibility could be an air lock in the fuel system. Try pumping the button on the top of the fuel pump until it goes hard and then starting.

Could even be your starter components about to fail. I had this for a little while until they give up the ghost just before xmas. Change the components from the part numbers provide before [do a seatch for another starter etc.]
