  • underpowered?...

after a recent service, i am quite confident that my truck is running as well as ever, however..i am moving house at the moment and today i just could not help notice how under powered the thing seems to be especially with a moderate load (though not excessive). may be its just me? i am not an auto box fan but ive had it over six months. i dont have the option of ramming it in second. i just find i dont have the power sometimes. all the kick down works etc, i even had cough cough, 95 out of it this week, it just struggles when demand is placed on it like hills etc. it will always get up but on a good hill it wouldnt go over fifty. also, it just never revs high. even when i really give it some, it barely scrapes 4000rpm. i have never seen it higher.
....just wondered if anyone else thought this (aside from obvious comments coming from 3ltr owners)

I found this with my 2.4lt. The only conclusion I came to was that it was a bit sluggish under load because it was an auto as I have had 2.4 manual pick
ups for years and they were real workhorses. I had everything I could think of done to my 2.4lt eg full service, fuel filter change, rad flush, checked out by a deisel specialist and other stuff but it just didn't pull under load as I thought it would although never had it near 4,000rpm. I don't think a Surf is meant to go at great speeds.

A Surf weighs the best part of two tons empty - so certainly 2 tons if you are moving house. The 2.4 diesel is about 98bhp - so thats under 50 per ton. So the performance is going to be marginal when you add in a gradient. The auto box will usually prevent you from being in the right gear for best pulling power unless it is locked up in 4th between 2000 and 3000 rpm or at very low speeds when you are getting the full benefit of the torque multiplication.

However, it will always get you where you want to be - so just relax and enjoy it

        Cheers

suppose your right, it always gets you there! i did have some pretty big loads in it. having a sea kayak and a garden bench strapped to the roof on one trip probably did not help!!

A potential of £1500 when the head goes + any other bits that blow up.
