  • 1KZ-TE surf fires up then cuts out.

    Hi All,
I have a (new to me) 1994 Second Generation 1KZ-TE surf that has a problem.
The engine fires up ok when the key is turned to the "start" position, but as soon as is put back to normal "on" position the engines cuts out dead.
If I keep the key in the "start" position the engine will continue to run.
With the key in the "on" position the dash lights come on as expected.

    Troubleshooting so far:
Pulled and checked all the fuses in the fuse panel next to the throttle pedal with a multimeter.
Removed and completly disassembled cleaned and reassebbled the ignition switch (the dash lights ccome on in the "on" position as expected - so the ignition switch is working).
Cracked a injector and confirmed that I have diesel to the injectors (thus eliminating fuel and fuel filter issues).
Removed the air filter and confirmed the airfilter is OK (thus eliminating air filter blockage issues).
Removed and checked both ECD relays with a 12v supply + multimeter (both relays open/close fine).
If I hold the key in the cranking "start" position it runs, ticks over and responds to the throttle, obviously the starter is spinning but the engine is running under it's own steam until I release the key and it cuts out.
The fact that the engine runs fine in the "start" position eliminates pretty much everthing phyiscal (filters, injectors, compression, fuel, air, timing).
The only things remaining are sensors or control system ... faulty sensor, wire, relay, valve, ECU, pnumatic line ...

The question is which one is casuing my problem?

I have checked for fault codes (by jumping the "TE1" and "E1" teminals) and there aren't any.

Has anyone come across this before? If so what was the sucesfull resolution ?

I see that identical symotoms are reported in some previous forums posts:

The 1KZ-TE surf broke down when I was 300km from home (I'm back home now), so the rescue mission will be a choice between either taking parts to it, or recovery with a car trailer towed by my trusty 1992 Second Generation 3L (2.8L) surf.

    Thanks,
    Glyn.

Just a guess at this time but check for power at the Spill Control Valve when ignition is in the on position.

      one suspect is injection timing.
the ip uses a fixed amount of timing on start up and then switches to ecu control. i would check the timing solenoid (bottom rear if i remember right). then possibly timing resistor or eprom (depending on what version you have). check the leads to it for a break etc. put a meter on and see if there is a signal there. or look for a sensor that stops timing from working. usual culprit is crank sensor.
