So, I've been lurking for a while and have a pondering!
I'm thinking of getting a second car for pottering about, being a bit scruffy and towing thing occasionally. I quite like the idea of a 2nd gen surf but there seem to be some pros and cons... The other option is a 1st gen discovery
Pros:
- It's a bit different
- From what people say, it's pretty reliable
- I like how they look
- It's good for towing
- Possibly comfier than a discovery
- Rust seems to be better than equivalent age discovery
- Most spares seem to be available
Cons:
- It's an import, so insurance will be more expensive
- Tax sometimes seems to be confusing to the DVLA
- They're not that common, so if something goes wrong there's not much know-how out there.
- Not all parts are available of the shelf (is that true?)
- This forum isn't as active as some (not to be rude about it; there's loads of good stuff on here). But less common car = less busy forum
- As they get older there's lots more electrical glitches
Overall I just wonder if I'm 5 years too late to jump on the bandwagon? They are less common and getting quite old now...
What should I do? Should heart rule head, or is it a bit daft?
Would I be better off with a UK 4 runner? Less common still, but easier to insure / tax?
Hmm....
