I seem to have gone from a newbie too intermediate...Yet others in here with over 150 posts and blue stars (will get one soon) are still "newbies"

0-50 posts you are a Newbie Surfer
50+ you are a Intermediate Surfer
125+ is the next change
250+ ??
500+ ??
1000+ ??

As a basic user these change automatically as your post count goes up.
If you Donate/Subscribe then you come out of the basic user group (I update your profile) and have the option to change your user title.
However as you come out of the basic group when your profile is updated the user name no longer changes with you post count, hence some people have donated, have 500 posts but are still a newbie. Hope that makes sense.
