Not worth the bother upgrading IMHO. Just scan the web for some keen deals out there.

If you are keen to just add memory, try www.crucial.com/uk they are a good make & they have a nice little programme that lets you find out the memory your pc is running currently provided you have make & model. There are quite a lot of permutations out there.

Might even find some memory cheap on Ebay, a lot of folks break up their old PCs to make a few quid towards he new one.

I wouldn't buy second hand ram on ebay, you don't know what your buying and it could have been overclocked, made that mistake the other week with 1 Gig of Kingston Hyperex Pc3500, fitted it to my MSI board with AMD 64 bit 3200 processor and all it did was crash, turned out that one module was faulty, got my £170 back plus another £20 for the trouble, I was lucky that it came from an honest ebayer.

You sure it's not 128mb of ram?(16,32,64,128,256,512..... .etc)if you need to free up some memory try using Rambooster, you can download this free from some download sites.

I take off my hat to you, salute you and you have my fullest admiration. My building skills are a little restricted. i.e. Radio stuff, my Zook and a bit of DIY carpentry. Oh, and the patio.

I'm afraid I was a bit of a Luddite and got left behind by the technological revolution. I only realised the value of a PC when I was forced, kicking and screaming, into using them at work. I bought this one so that I could write articles and that book I've been meaning to write for years. Then I discovered the internet. At least I have written the foreward to my book. It's only taken five years!!!!!
              It's only a hobby!

Interests me m8, I build all my own and my m8's. I wouldn't touch the main retailers, such as pc world with a barge pole. They are over the top in prices, and charge a !!!!!! fortune for any work they do on ya pc.

I asked 'em how much to fit a dvd-rom drive (not a writer, just a rom). They told me it was a special offer if I bought it in the shop, they would fit it for 25 quid..............what a !!!!!! rip off!!!, it takes 5 mins and only 3 wires, thats if you include the audio cable!!!!!!!!!.

I want to build a see through model similar to yours m8, got the neon psu, just got to add the rest of me bits.

Sorry to jump on ya post phil

This is what it says in System Information.

                  AuthenticAMD AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor
                  28MB RAM
                  81% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (3180MB free)
                  Available space on drive C: 3180MB of 4133MB (FAT32)

Don't know what the boffins will make of this.
I'm amazed Windows 98 even starts up with 28mb ram.

Personally if you can do stuff on ham radio you can build a PC, it isn't rocket science, just a processor and memory to plug into the mother board, few screws to mount it in the case, a PSU, a bunch of PCI/ISA cards, a couple of drices (floppy, CD/DVD rewriter, and Hard drive).

Generally the hardest bit is installing the OS and all the drivers, however Windows XP comes with a large percentage of all the drivers required to make it all work anyway and most new BIOS systems come with support for the CD as well as the HDD and the floppy so not even any need to install CD drivers before being able to load the OS from the CD drive.

I built my current home PC about 3 years ago, 1.5ghz AMD processor, 512mb ram, 1 x 40mb HDD, 1 x 80mb HDD, CD rewriter, DVD drive, 6 x USB ports, wireless Keyboard and mouse. Whole thing cost about £500 including buying the keyboard and mouse. I originally ran it on Windows 98 however I got XP when it came out and it is very reliable and very fast.

                  Cheers

If you can build your own PC or have someone on here do it 4 you, go for it. I build/sell/repair pc's, but I'm not much use to you coz I'm over the water.
A PC built for you by someone who knows what they're doing will in the end be a far better machine than any store bought one (especially big brand names). It will be built to your needs, won't come with loads of software you'll never use and shouldn't have had to pay for, will come with the software you want, especially a proper Windows disc which most of the big name box shifters will not give you. It will also be built using proper ATX industry standard components, unlike the big box shifters who use propriery parts, making future repairs and/or upgrades at minimum more expensive and often nigh on impossible.

More of my reasons here http://www.quepublishing.com/articles/article.asp?p=339053
                    and here http://www.obriencomputers.com/O_y.htm

I now consider most of the big name machines as disposable, fine machines while they work, often seemingly great value, but ultimatly disposable, do not buy one with the hope of any major upgrades over the next few years, be prepared instead to replace it.
Still I actually kinda like Dell, after all they provide me with fully 50% of my repair work, either physically faulty machines, or people riddled with viruses on their under 3 month old machines whose anti-virus was not configured properly, whose preventative windows updates and latest drivers were not installed at the factory, and whose owners have gotten so peeved off, firstly with the need to cal tech support so often, and secondly with getting absolutly nowhere fast using said support. They then come to me

Take up one of the offers here to have one built for you, it should be best in the long run.

Thanks for all the replies chaps (and chapesses).

There is a new place just opened down the road called Custom PCs. I had a word with the guy and he reckons, from what I have told him about my machine, that he can upgrade it for under £200. He said to take it down, he will have a look and give me a quote for an upgrade or advise me to bin it/use it as a scond machine for one of my radio applications (PSK31, SSTV etc).
He also advises loading Windows XP for all the reasons mentioned above.

                      Thanks again.

With the age of your PC it's unlikely that you could upgrade it sufficiently to run Windows XP at anything like the rate it needs to run. You need a bare minimum of 128M just to get it to boot up. Mine's got 512M of RAM and it's still not that fast.

I'd honestly take the plunge and get a whole new box but keep the keyboard & monitor if they are OK. I'd also buy a new mouse as you will find a wheelmouse or an infra red one much better. You'll also find that broadband works much better if you've got a reasonably up to date PC.
