If you are changing the oil every 5000km as recommended then their is no need to go crazy on the oil.

The general consensus is to buy a semi synthetic 10W40 specifically for Turbo Diesels.

Do a search on coolant as there are some issues on mixing the types that requires a thorough flushing.

Any cheap turbo diesel oil will be okay. If you change every 5000Km as Toyota recomend then by all means spend £30 on synthetic 'all-singing-all-dancing' oil each time if you you wish. Personnaly I'm using £4.99 a gallon TD oil from Asda at the moment!

In diesel engines the oil lubricates but takes a lot of cr*p, crud and acid combustion deposits out of the engine- hence the frequent service intervals needed. For a car with 12,000 mile service interval I might consider using a "brand" oil. As it is I'm changing the oil every 3-4 months at the moment.
