TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp said Tuesday it is recalling some 340,000 units of five sport-utility and commercial vehicle models for free replacement of defective parts.
The total includes 330,496 units of the Toyota Hilux Surf, Hilux Surf 4WD and Hilux Surf Wagon whose steering wheels could become uncontrollable because of weak relay rods, Toyota said in a report to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The vehicles were manufactured between December 1988 and May 1996. (Kyodo News)

Maybe someone might suggest what a relay rod is???
**edit**
Its a track rod. Weak? - try getting the ends off. Maybe they mean the damper?. Mine is fine. How bout they recall the 2nd gens for failing smog tests
Whats the chance they really want to see how we've improved on their designs in the meantime , maybe they should haul in the likes of Delboy, I'm sure he wouldnt mind the attentionLast edited by JimL; 3 November 2004, 23:24.

OK - heres the result so far...
My local garage did not know about the recall but put me through to Customer relations at Toyota UK HQ.
I spoke to a very helpful lady there in the imports section. She also did not know about the recall but happily looked at the link to Japan today. She was very concerned and said that she will email directly to their Japanese HQ today for details and get back to me tomorrow. I asked her if she could try to obtain a list of affected chassis numbers...
She also gave me her direct phone number and email address so I can contact her again.
So far, so good... I'll let you know what happens when she calls back.Linda

Recall, what recall?
Hi,
I've just joined this excellent site and came across this post advising of a recall.
I've contacted Toyota New Zealand who seemed to have no knowledge of this recall although they have very helpfully taken down my vehicle details and have promised they will contact Toyota Japan to determine wherther my vehicle is affected by this recall and will "get back to me".
I now eagerly await their response.
