Unmovable mist can mean your heater matrix is leaking coolant, as the car warms up so does the coolant which evaporates inside your car causing the mist, big job but maybe not what whats up with yours. Odd smells are a telltale with this one.

Had the same problem today. Most likely just very moist air coming into the car. Try running the aircon at the same time. I found that dried up the air and cleared the screen, although it took a while. Other than that, make sure the air is all going to the screen and put the heater on hot with only medium fan on, as that lets the air heat more before it hits the screen. Alternatively, try not to breath too much!!!!

Rick (Vagrant No2) must have this problem quite a lot then - he seems to produce odd smells quite frequently!!!!

I have the same problem, very poor air flow through the top vents. Seems like it's a common problem. Best I've found is to set the heater and fan at full and close the two side vents. It does the job fairly well. I also keep a demisting pad tucked on the top of the dash for that extra wipe when needed.

i have no funny smells in the car lol(just the normal)
air flow out the front vents is poor to say the least but all other vents seem fine
will have to invest in a demister pad i think

hmmm there must be a better way - best i have found so far is to turn aircon on and have heater in the middle with middle flow rate.
then 2 seconds later wipe like mad with your arm and try not to crash :P

I have never had any real problems demisting the Surf, although as an ex Volvo man and having been spoilt by their demisters, I must admit that the Surfs is not great.

As already mentioned, closing the side fresh air vent helps, as does making sure that the heater flow is on outside air and not recycled. Having a side window or the tailgate window (although this inhibits the heated rear window) ajar also helps.

I also clean the inside of my glass with a solution of 1teaspoon vinegar, a tiny drop of washing up liquid and clean warm water, which I take off with a chamois leather which helps to stop the screen misting in the first place. I have found that, having driven a mixture of petrol and diesel cars, that the inside of a diesels windscreen gets that oily film much quicker than a petrol vehicle.

I had a heater matrix go in my Peugeot. The smell is quite obvious, so is the fact that the car will mist up all the time.

I always have to have the air con ON to demist properly, cleaning the windscreen with vinegar also helps(bit smelly tho).

Ditto. A/C on to get anywhere near clear. Mist goes a few seconds after turning a/c on but soon comes back after turning it off. Mine seems worse than it was last year at the moment. So much for the fecking Winter Pack!

Have a look at the operating mechanism behind the dash by your left foot rest, there are a number of small white plastic levers to direct air flow depending what button is pressed on the heater controls.
I was having the same prob with demisting as you so i checked to see why there was poor air flow to the screen, and saw that the actuating lever to direct air to the screen was sticking.
                              this is what i did;
                              switch on ignition/start engine,
                              turn blowers on,
press button for central air vents,(furthest button on left)
look down at operating levers down by foot rest,
press button for screen demist,at the same time as watching levers,
you should see which lever moves.
mine only moved half way and stuck so i "helped" it the rest of the way and now i get a good blast of air to the screen
It also helps to have the front windows open slightly if you have wind deflectors fitted
                              Does this make any sense?
                              I hope this helps,
                              Cheerz,Vince.
