  • Rear Diff.

    Is the rear diff in a 91 2.4td (are these 2nd gen?) an open diff or LSD.
    I could just jack up the back and find out myself, but that doesn't help my post count.

    The easiest way to find out is to do what I did.

    1. Jack up one rear wheel to work on vehicle.
    2. Finish work, replace wheel. Start to put wheel nuts back on.
    3. Rotate wheel to get better purchase on wheel nuts.

    If after point 3 the vehicle moves forward and falls off jack (like mine did) then you've got a lsd

    The clever way is to look at the transmission code on the vin plate. For a full explanation look at http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/other/4_axles.html

      Have you looked under the back? ours has a white sticker on the diff housing with 'LSD oil' on it.

      The clutch plate wear over time, good chance it needs rebuilding on a older truck, so just seeing if both wheels spin in the same direction might not help you much.

      Safest way is the vin No., they where an option on most trucks.

        Hi,
        On mine there is no white sticker.
        VIN plate says: Trans:A343F Axle:G144
        I'm trying to find out what these codes mean now.

        I know the 'G' stands for 8" dia

            OK - I have read that link. Just took a while to understand it.

            G144

            G = 8"
            14= 4.875 gears
            4 = 4 pinion (not LSD)
