  • Registering a Vehicle

    Hi Guys

I'm sure most of you can probaby answer this if not Lucky or Hilux Bob.

I have seen a Nov 94 Surf that needs to be registered. If I buy it can i wait until November to do the registration or is this against the law because it is not done straight away.

Obviously the deregistration documents etc will have older dates on and the purchase information will relate to today - will this be a problem

Can i get it all ready i.e full service etc, and the bits to get the MOT and then wait for November the 1st and put it in. Or should I wait until November to get it MOT. Will the registration Office not like the fact it has sat in my drive unregistered for a Month.

Hope you can shed some light on this

    Cheers

    Hi Norm
As long as the vehicle is NOT on the road,on private land it
    should not mater.
If you know a trader you can use his trade plates to take it
for a service/mot as it will be covered on his plates.
Dont forget it could have been sat no the docks or auction
house for a long time so the time delay is no probs.
    Cheers Chris

ps. some insurers will cover the vehicle on just a chassis no.
    pre registration

Do you mean registered or taxed...........if you mean registered, it won't matter when you register it, it will still be registered form the day of manufacture.........ie.'94 would be J or K I think.

If taxed, then as poppy has said

        Hi Chris

Yeah I have already investigated insuring on the Chasis number so this will be ok and i thought if it was on private land then this was ok, My query is that when i get around to registering it should I get the MOT just before or anytime this month upto November when i can register it without needing an SVA.

Will they look at the MOT and say hey you got it MOT'd early October and now its november the 1st (spose i could probably get my MOT guy to write 1st November on it anyway!! )

Fieldsy I thought when you first get a vehicle you had to register them in this country so they were UK registered and at that point you paid for an amount of tax Therefore to make it so that I didn't have to put it through an SVA i would need to wait till November to register it (this including the first tax disc). I thought they were one and the same the first time around.

Hmm, not sure on that one m8y, I understand what you are saying and what you are trying to do, just trying to avoid the SVA. As far as I'm aware there are no documents that you have to present for registration purposes which show the importation date of the vehicle, just mot, insurance, application form, utility bill and driving licence. I may be wrong, but I think thats everything?.

de-registration documents, shipping invoice, c&e 388 form are only for the SVA.

To register the vehicle you will need the C&E 386 and the De-Reg document.

                Hi Norm
If the vehicle is 10yrs or older then you do not need an SVA test
as for the MOT you can only forward the date if you already
have an MOT on the vehicle and the due date in with in a certain
time period I think 6 weeks but dont quote me on that.
Only problem might arise if they want to see the vehicle to
check out the chassis nos/engin nos etc.

Try to contact your local DVLA and ask them direct at least
you will know whats wanted Chris

poppy, I already did this, as i was intrigued, and got the reply above

Mind you, I've just realised, the info they sent me was only to confirm name, address, and insurance............not even a mention of the MOT, so it could be an idea to take !!!!!! everything

keep the car till nov. test it when you want it does not matter.
if the dvla want to inspect the car you do not need trade plates to get it there just make an appointment with them and drive the car to them.just make sure you have all the paper work.
[you can drive the car to the mot with out trade plates just make a appointment.]
[trade plates are a universal tax and number plate but if you read the law books you cant tax a unregisterd car]
                    hope this helps

Cheers for all the info guys

I think if i do decide to buy it i will hold onto it until November on private land and then get it registered. I will get my mechanic to do all the necessary work upto November so its ready to go

                      Cheers
