Jerry Cans

Due to some bad planning and stupidity on my behalf I found myself halfway up a mountain this last weekend, with a flashing fuel warning light.

So, apart from not starting to go up a mountain with with a less than a full tank I've decided I need to buy a spare fuel container. I want to get a 20ltr 'Jerry Can', and I've spotted some on ebay that'll come in around £30 incl the spout and posting etc. Does anyone know of a cheaper source?

On a side note (for Lucky and Koi), if you could find a supplier, maybe you could add something like this to the accessories section of the shop? I think spare fuel definately comes in under the essential safety equipment for offroading!

I can get cheaper trade from a supplier down here , but after postage I recon would still be £25 .
I paid Approx £8 +vat (trade) for the 10litre jerry can used on the Suzuki as a fuel tank .

You can get them online here for about the same price. They also do used ones which would be more than adequate - and would look suitably distressed for off road use.

Caution regarding using 'used' jerry cans . Make sure you filter the fuel as it comes out the jerry can as often dirt/grit is in the used cans and will start to block up your fuel filter . Father in law killed his tractor this way . Had to strip fuel lines out and the tank . Renewed the filters as full/blocked .
I reccomend a stocking over the outlet or in a funnel as you por the fuel out .
Don't ask wot size stockings I use as they are difficult to take off whilst I am sitting here .

You will always see them at Auto jumbles or army surplus stores and i think building supplys

Ex army ones are usually better quality than the type you get from auto stores, seem to be made of more durable metal but the paint is usually well faded. I'd always give them a good rinse out with diesel, kerosene or petrol to make sure there is no gunk left in them to block filters etc...

Are you aware that the petrol stations are not allowed to sell more than 5 litres in a can! And you are not allowed to carry more than one 5 litre container in your vehicle!!

I often have a heated discussion with the attendant's (JOBSWORTH!) when I fill up my tanks for my boat. These tanks are sealed and properly marked but they say its not good enough!

I also had a BIG disagreement with the ferry company when I told them that one of the tanks was empty. They only said that I had to fill the tank up with WATER!!! you can imagine what I said!!!!!!

Once again this proves WHAT AN ASS THE LAW IS!

Are you aware that the petrol stations are not allowed to sell more than 5 litres in a can! And you are not allowed to carry more than one 5 litre container in your vehicle!!

I was aware of that, but I thought it only applied to Petrol, not Diesel.

Ditto. I thought the 5L limit was for petrol cos of its low flash point. Diesel having a higher flashpoint should be OK. How much white spirit, meths, cellulose thinners, nitro glycerine, (only kiddin') barbecue lighter fluid can I carry in my car?

I thought that it was only for Petrol as well. The permissible quantity of petrol that may be carried in a vehicle at any one time must not exceed either:-
2 x 5 litre approved plastic containers (total 10 litres max.)
or
2 x 10 litre approved metal containers (total 20 litres max.)

Yes you could be right I must admitt that it was Petrol I was purchasing as the boat unfortunatly is not diesel.
