  • Towing question, and yes I have read the thread in the basement!!

OK, so as you do, some moving is required from Auckland to Wellington, which is about 650km's. According to the trailer guy, my surf (2.4 TD) should manage this trailer which has a max load capacity of 1800 kilo's and will probably be loaded to the max, any thoughts, tips anyone, thanks! There's also quite a few hills on the way, the trailer is braked and I've not towed this kind of weight or distance before, ooer......yes I have a tow hitch but no idea what the rating is!!
(I'ts gonna take me weeks to get down there!! arrrgghhh)

I tow our caravan around with a 2.4 and it weighs about 1400 kilo fully laden, it's no problem at all, you will notice a fair decrease in speed but just take your time and dont try to thrash it to go quicker, just maintain steady throttle and it will get there without the need to starin anything.
We find anything up to about 65 with the van is fairly comfortable but easiest at 55-60. If you havent towed before see if you can borrow the trailer for an hours drive just to get used to it first.
If it aint broke...........give it some more abuse!!!!!!!!
I gave it some abuse.................and it broke!!!!!!!

Dont forget when you reverse you turn the wheel the wrong way first.

The shorter the trailer the worse it is....if you cant see the trailer in your mirrors use a stick stuck in the air to show where it is

Watch the temperture gauge. If you can, get a gearbox oil cooler fitted. nothing like heat for stuffing gearboxes.

Thanks guys, I was more concerned over wether the surf could handle this kind of weight, especially from a braking point of view! Manouevering the trailer is not an issue, I grew up on a farm! Where we had nice big powerful tractors that were built for such tasks....but i don't fancy driving a tractor 650kms!!
