  • So will it fly?

A plane is on a runway which is a giant conveyor belt, ready to take off.

This runs backwards (against the direction of the plane taking off), and automatically counters the exact speed of the plane going forwards.

    Will the plane take off?

Every time I see people debate this, my IQ drops a little.

Planes are propelled by thrust, not wheel driven, so relative ground speed is not relevant at all, - unless the wheels bearings/wheels/tyres fail due to operating at twice the intended speed!
      More Lift.
      More Tyres.
      More Engine.

Remember that from some years ago and no it wont fly, now if it was a helicopter,

The best way I heard to describe it was imagine holding a toy plane on one of the food conveyors at the supermarket.

With the conveyor off, you push it forward and after a few feet lift it into the air like it was flying.

With the conveyor on, you are able to do exactly the same, it's just the wheels on the bottom of the plane are moving much more quickly.

The reason is because your hand moving the toy plane is providing the thrust, just like the plane's engines do in real life.

In essence, the engines of the plane have no idea how fast the ground is moving towards them or not, because they have no reason to care - they just continue to provide the thrust needed to get the plane in the air, even if the wheel bearings in the landing gear are rotating their nuts off.

Makes sense to me, but then I've not seen mythbusters and have no idea what they came up with!
