Insurance question

Some advice needed. In July we will be travelling to the UK, the plan is to borrow the in-laws's car and do a bit of a European tour for a few weeks. There seem to be a problem adding us on the insurance. My wife is a UK citizen, I am a EU citizen, we both have UK licences , NI numbers etc , but we are not currently UK residents , having lived in Africa for many years. Any ideas on ways around that?? It seems UK insurers won't insure non UK residents.

My neighbor, UK born and breed for 45 years left UK and worked in Canada for 2 years. When he came back he had the same issue, no Insurance company wanted to cover him. it took some searching but did find a company in the end. i will see who he used for you.

Or use a UK address. Have you got any friends and family here? It will be much easier in the long run if you can use a uk address.

The in-laws live in the UK, and we normally use their address. However this time round, as I was on the phone trying to add us on my father in law's policy, as we normally do when we are in UK, the guy asked me if we were residents. I said no, and he replied that in that case the insurance cover would be invalid. I could say I am a resident but in case of a claim I have a feeling I would be found out. I would rather do it properly, with some specialist insurer that covers non residents.There must be some that do, like those that cover car rentals companies maybe?

As you have discovered, the more you tell the insurance companies the more it costs you. I'm not advocating being dishonest, but who knows what is in your head? You may well decide to move back to the UK, spend a couple of months here, then quite legitimately change your mind and head back to Monkey Bay.

Ahh, I think it's Monkey Bay for me for a few more years, unless Jeremy gets into office, I am becoming a bit of a communist in my old age lol
I found out that there are some quite strict rules as to who qualifies for residency, and me spending a couple weeks a year in the UK does not quite cut it...
Anyway, in the end I found a non resident policy with Aviva, through a broker, which wasn't not cheap (around 500 pounds), but it covers us all fully comp and includes Europassist recovery and some other things have forgotten, so not too bad I guess.

I think you better ask for advice from a local insurance agency. I think they will have the most relevant information for you. I had the same question when I had to move from a country to another and I was looking for the same kind of information. I did not know whom should I ask for the answer's. Oh that's quite difficult but there is a solution, don't be afraid man. I know that there are a few insurance companies that can help you cause they all give insurance only to UK residents. That's it, I don't know why(( But I came across an insurance company https://www.general.com/articles/are...surance-policy when I was helping my father in law to get insurance after living many years in USA and it took us so much time to find one that will actually work for him. We found it) And I am sure you should consult them and ask for help!
