  • Diff gearing question for V6 VZN130R

    1993 VZN130R diff ratio - been changed?

    G'day

Recently resurrected the old VZN130R that's been sitting on axle stands for 7 years. Have been driving Prado V6 J120 and Hilux 3.0TD KUN26R. Getting back into the Surf has been fun but something didn't feel right.

Seems to be over revving, i.e. gearing doesn't feel right. Runs at 3000rpm for 100kmh in 5th. I run in one gear higher than I would in the other 4WDs for a given speed. Was thinking that its just the step back in power / tech. Checked the diff ratio on the VIN plate: G255 which is 8" gear, 4.556, limited slip.

It's always had 31x10.5R15 tyres since I got it in 2002. 265/70R15 was the factory size. Am wondering if previous owner changed the diff ratio to compensate for larger tyres. Vehicle is Jap import that had quality mods so not impossible that an enthusiast wanted more low end grunt.

Can anyone tell me (only for the 2nd gen 3.0 V6 please) what revs the engine sits at for normal driving speeds, e.g. 100kmh (62mph) in 5th, 60kmh (37mph) in 4th, etc. Would really appreciate a direct comparison. Preferably with standard or 31" tyres.

    Thanks.
    Hilux KUN26R, Surf VZN130R, Highlander GSU45R
