New to the surf

Just bought a 2nd gen 2.4td as a "cinderella project" basically she looks rough as on the outside but underneath she's got the potential, I've done my research and have a decent idea what to expect, however expect the unexpected so any advice that you guys can give me would be a great help. I am mechanically minded so know my way round and engine but this is my first solo project. Cheers

watch out for the 2.4's block to go pop, they have a bit of a reputation
