  • Bad Starting

The old 2.4 tractor has taken to not starting well the last few days, ok once it had started but that initial start is taking ages, it's winding over on the starter fine and lucky I have two good batterys, When it does eventually fire there is a massive cloud of smoke, I put about two lts of ATF in a low tank before a fairly long run to Gosport so hoping that will help, (going to get a 20lt can of ATF)
    any other ideas?
I did do the seals on the IP and wondering if I got the pump a tooth out on refitting!, can this be adjusted? any recommendations on tuners without me re-mortgaging the house?

AH! thanks, no I have never changed them since I got it (11years now) well overdue I guess,
After the run with ATF it started ok this morning, but I will look into replacing the glow plugs asap

there is no glow plug in the manifold. thats the secondary glow resistor.

check the glows are ok, make sure you check its receiving voltage. real common for people to get the glow connection insulators mixed up and short it out blowing the fuse.

Thanks Tweakes, i'll check that first, I'm pretty sure I put the insulators back on in the right order when I replaced everything after the IP seals job but I could well have ballsed it up,
I removed all the bussbar stuff and the manifold to give me plenty of room for the IP also the manifold was leaking (black crap down the block under it)
just wondered about the belt being a tooth out as it's not been great starting since I did the job but it always started fairly well till now, i'll check through from the fuse, cheer's.

Also check the fuel lines and primer unit. Mine does this too, and I'm certain it's down to a slight fuel leak - the primer goes soft and never fully stiffens when pumping. It goes in on Tuesday to the car doctor.

Thanks, pretty sure the primer is ok, and I have to say that since sticking 3lt of ATF in a low tank it seems much better, I will replace the glow plugs (looked them up on Roughtrax and not too bad price wise also need a new insulator for one of them as it broke ages ago but is insulating properly, i'll wait and make sure I come round from my operation before forking out money though, just careful
