Have tried all suggested: I now have McFee back in control of protection.
I have just been to the M/Soft down load site and hit a hyperlink ( details ) and it came up error on page on the bottom bar.

My hair is starting to drop out.

SP2 has caused various problems to some of my customers. When it was installed Windows created a Restore Point before installation. S o you can restore it back.

It keeps telling me it cant protect my computer turn off and start again. And so the cycle starts again.

Hi Everybody

Ive got my old system back and all my buttons now work.
The system restore would not work due to the fact that the buttons to continue would not function which was causing a circle of events. After talking to my brother-in -law he said "his company has now refused to update any of thier customers with the XP 2 Service pack ".
My only option left was to remove it in Add or Remove. Once started it appeares to have its own removal wizard and takes about 30 min. A little bit of re-adjustment to the screen resoloution has been necessary and I will have to re-position desktop Icons.

Welcome back as such...and just shows how reliable the updates are from micro$oft...past experiences with them releasing service pack updates to fix security issues with security flaws in the releases themselves.

I turned off automatic updating facility a long time ago and will connect manually and select the package updates

Pretty much everyone I know who has installed SP2 has had no real problems. The main thing that doesn't work for everyone is the new Security Center not recognising certain firewalls and anti-virus software. In these cases it's not MS's fault as it means that the firewall/anti virus vendor hasn't implemented the necessary hooks to allow their software to be monitored.

XP SP2 went through a huge amount of testing (I was on the beta test team). However when you think about all the possible combinations of hardware and software that can be used to make a PC you soon realise that it would be impossible to test them all and it's inevitable that some combinations will have issues. Often however, these can usualy be fixed by the standard Microsoft fix of re-installing windows from scratch and applying SP2 before anything else.

I highly recommend that all XP users install SP2. It really will make you PC safer and better protected from those with malicious intent.

do you think that M/S after a time will build up a database with Q fixes compiled from complaints and error reporting regarding programs it dose not support.

I've had sp2 installed about 5-6 weeks now, and everything is working fine, had no major probs, only thing it doesn't recognise is Sygate Personal Firewall Pro, which I prefer to the MS firewall, I'm also running Kapersky virus scanner as Norton was beginning to get a pain, and its also buggy when its uninstalled, it leaves registry changes, which I had to change manually to install Kapersky.

It also keeps the sasser and blaster worms at bay (installing the patches)

Found all the drivers I needed for xp on the net and my scanner and printer are over a coupla years old.

Just formatted my mates from millenium to xp+sp2 and also found all he's drivers for he's hardware and running as sweet as a nut.

So I would say on the positive side I like the SP2, but unfortunately it doesn't always work for everyone. With the amount of appz/hardware/software that is around now, its gonna be hard not to find some that have compatibility issues
