  • Another weekend and it's broken again!!!

Perhaps the worst weekend todate with the surf! I'm seriously considering selling up as it's just a money pit!!!

So today we went to Wildtrax, and it's a good crack! I decided to hit the water hole! It was deep! Deeper than expected! She cut out and died, & I had to get recovered!

The recovery has trashed my winch bumper! That's another story

I got it running again, these are indestructible it had sucked up a bit of water but all seems ok now.

But I have 2 problems now......

I have a bit of an oil leak from the crank pulley!

4wd is not working!! I can here the click and knock as it goes in, the light comes on but there is no drive! The inner cv's jump as you pull forward as you'd expect! And all the shafts are turning but there just seems to be no drive!

It can't be the diff as it was working fine until it got very wet!!

    Help please!!!

Is it the electric actuator on the transfer case preventing 4wd engaging?

      I don't know......

I did the ADD delete mod on here when I swappes the diffs over so we can rule out that side of it........

The 4wd light is on..... Everything I find goes on about no light/ flashing light.

But there was no drive the truck struggled to get back out with rwd only and we checked on a steep slope, defo no drive to the front wheels.

Well if you have deleted the ADD then everything front prop forward is more or less ruled out assuming you have checked all the shafts are locked together.

So the problem must be with the transfer case. I dont know how the lights work. I always thought there was a switch in the box somewhere so it would only come on when 4wd was engaged.

If just the water has caused it then for me the problem must be electrical and as far as I have been able to tell the front prop is engaged/disengaged by an electric motor actuator at the back of the tcase.

If this gets wet then 4wd wouldnt engage.

The front prop is turning! We've checked that by laying under it, the shafts are turning to...........

          But there is no 4wd!

I can hear the click as I push the button.....

I can hear the clonk as I push the button.....

But the sodding thin will not drive the front wheels!!!

Have you extended the front diff breather? And have you got a snorkel?
            Cheers

              No and no!

The truck is running fine now apart from the oil leak so I'm not overly concerned about the bit of water she snorted!

Would a lack of diff breather cause the problem of no 4wd??

Well, that I am not sure...although water getting in the front diff will mix with the oil and in the long run won't do it much good....there's a couple of write ups on here on 2nd Gen breathers.

Yes I can see that being a longer term issue for sure......

But why would 4wd suddenly not engage after a good dunking?

The hot oil in the diff contracts when submerged in water causing a low pressure area this then causes water to be sucked in if the breather is under the water .

                            Thanks biohazard,

So having trawled the inter web....... Could it be the oil pressure and thus the switch for it on the diff?

                            Cheers,

OK so I'm racking my brains and searching the net but I'm sturggling as all seems to come back to ADD and I DO NOT HAVE THAT!!!

The light is definatley coming on and off on the switch, this is good!
There is definatley a click when the button is pressed, this is good!
There is defiantley a Clonk from below as the 4wd is activated, this is good!

With the hubs in lock position, and 4wd engaged the front prop is spinning and the shafts are turning. I layed down next to it as it was driven forwards and backwards. No nasty noises.

I need to get it in the air I guess to check is in 4wd, but it's high and the highlift jack is next to useless so I need a garage.

                              What could possible causes be?

Diff shredded? I don't think it's this as it was working fine right up to the point it got stuck/ wet!

Water/ mud in the diff or the ADD bit (I have done the the ADD mod but on looking the pipes arent crimped up or a hose on it! Could this cause it to not engage?

Transfer case? Would it still make the clonk noise and would the light not flash if it was this?

                              Any suggestions greatfully received!!
