Hey all! I'm new here so please be nice! ;D
So I've been reading up on the differences between the 3.0L and 2.4L diesel engines and I can't decide. Here's some useful info:
I won't be using the truck lots. I commute into London via the Tube everyday, so the truck will mainly get used weekends and the occasional evening.
I plan to take it off-road. I'll be lifting it a bit maybe, I'll give it beefier tyres, it'll get spots on the front (of course) along with a few mods here and there. I won't go anywhere crazy. Just casual off-roading.
I'm a tinkerer. I currently have a dinky Peugeot 106 (first car, it was free, don't hurt me :P) and I got it in a not-so-great state, but I've restore it to it's former.. ahem.. "glory." I plan on selling it to go towards the Surf.
I won't be towing. Ever. I don't have anything TO tow.
I wanna help out when the white stuff appears. So I'll be fitting a winch and bringing a tow rope out with me to save other cars in the area. Obviously it'll need 4WD (without it, what's the point?)
Mileage isn't an issue. I can maintain the truck myself, really. So mileage can be dealt with. Maybe no higher than something like 160k miles.
I don't want to spend loads. I don't have a lot of money and I don't earn a huge amount, so surely the 2.4L would be cheaper to buy. Not bothered about running costs - and I'm aware they're virtually the same anyway!
I probably won't do more than 5000 miles a year.
I've read the buyers guide so I know what to look for when I eventually start looking at Surfs (haven't quite saved enough yet) but I just need to know whether a 2.4L will be suitable for me. I live in the Chiltern area in Bucks - we don't have any huge hills, but then I'm sure a 2.4L would be able to handle hills anyway.
TL;DR - I want a Surf, but I won't be driving it a lot or towing anything. Will the 2.4L be alright, as I'm trying to save money?
EDIT: Dunno if I'm right in saying this, but I'm led to believed that I I want a '96 model/gen 3 it won't come with a 2.4L anyway. I also did some insurance quotes and the 3.0L comes out a but cheaper than the 2.4L so it all boils down to ease of maintenance and stuff, I guess.
Thanks everyone!
