You are quite right Owen, mate. This forum does suffer from "playground syndrome", where sarcasm and "cliquiness" rule. In this very thread someone just calle dme a troll because I think that 3.0 surfs are better than the 2.4s...(I used to play football so I've been called a lot worse... )
However if you keep your surf,don't be fazed and stick with the forum. There is lots of invaluable info on here.
To avoid the "know it all" bullies use the search button. These cars have been around a long time, almost every technical issue has been dealt with in past threads.

Not sure of the reason for the hostility on here.

I bought a Surf that has a full UK service history with every old receipt and every old MOT. It has been kept indoors as a second car for the last 12 years by a middle age gent who didn't use it to go trashing around green lanes. It is in very good condition, has never overheated to his knowledge and everything works on it. Bar importing one myself it's in about as good condition as you'd find one. Bar buying one that's just had an entire head replacement there wasn't a lot more I could have done to find a good one.

Thinking I'd like to keep it for as long as possible I brought it in to my local - and up to this point reliable -garage to give it a coolant change and have a general once over. It overheats shortly after picking it up, probably blows the head and leaves me pretty gutted and looking at a massive bill.

Thinking I'd ask for some advice off some of the wise minds on this forum I'm then up against a few sarcastic comments and people doubting me for some reason?

I am a member on some other forums, which by comparison so far are a fair bit less aggressive and more helpful. Nonetheless, I'd like to thank those people who have genuinely offered their time to write some helpful replies which I can ask the garage to follow in the replacement. You're what forums are about.

Perhaps then it's the conviction you project in your posts that has started the confusion.
Point of fact
My EuroIV compliant Vito has comparable fuel consumption to my Surf.
My Surf has no trouble keeping up with the flow of traffic.
Bear in mind that around these parts not only do we have to put up with speed cameras(fixed) and mobile(hidden) we also have average speed cameras monitoring us.That tends to keep the speed down.
Since I have owned my truck the most expensive item I have had to buy for it has been the radiator, oh and a battery or two, I'm not going to count ARB brackets and the like.
Everything thing else that I have bought has been because I wanted to.
It has by far been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.
The have been two occasions when it has let me down, both by the MRS filling it up with petrol.
Off road I have got stuck twice where I needed assistance and both of those was running out of axle clearance and more my fault than the trucks.

Yes you can get the 3.0 for a bit more but surely a well kept vehicle is better than one with a dubious history as most of the current 3.0 kettle owners are finding out to their cost?
Yes you are entitled to your opinion but it might be worth changing the tune every now and again.

I think the OP is just making doubly sure that he has his info correct.
Let's be honest we would all prefer to have an air lock as opposed to having to shell out on a new head.
Since I deleted the metal heater piping running over the turbo, and the pipework running in front of the cam cover, filling and bleeding the system seems to be a whole load easier.
Like Vince has mentioned having the truck parked facing uphill makes its a lot easier though but mine was done on the level.

It will be interesting to see how our non resident troll changes his tune now we have had a rash of 3.0 kettles appearing.

Haha...I am no troll lol.
When new members come on the forum asking for advise on buying a surf I tell them to stay clear of the 2.4 as in my opinion it is the worst possible surf.
Compared to the other models (diesel or petrol) I find it sluggish, thirsty and with a propensity for overheating/head issues (even though some of the head issues are now surfacing with the 3.0 L too).
I also find that people often confuse the Top Gear 2.4 toyota engine (Hiace, "farming" pick ups etc) with the 2L-TE.
I enjoy surfs and my first one was, of course, a 2.4. I'm just telling prospective buyers that in my opinion for a little more cash they could get a much better surf.

Isn't that what these forums are about?...sharing opinions and ideas...

It's difficult to know if it would be better to chance it at another garage who may also bugger it up, or be sure that having already had one go they may learn from their mistake. Also this time I'll get them to agree in advance on some kind of warranty as with a new head and gasket they'll have no excuse!
