  • How do I lock 'swinging' spare?

    Guys & Gals

As some of you may know, I've recently returned to Surfing, this time though I have the rear mounted spare rather than the underslung one as was on my previous '91 SSRLtd.

Q - Is there anyway I can lock the swinging arm closed? I don't want anyone being able to pull the little catch and swing freely on my back end

    Cheers in advance

    hello
on mine there is a little metal bar that drops in and holds the spare in place , the bar was attatched to the frame of the spare wheel carrier .

      Cheers!

I've seen that (on the inside of the spare wheel?) but understood this was used to lock the swing mechanism open rather than closed (so as not to have it swing shut on the tailgate??).

I'm after something that would definately lock it closed (I don't trust anyone - and would probably be 'lucky' enough to have the peg nicked ).

        Hi Paul,

I think you can lock it closed using the pin as well. I'll go and have a look later!

Sounds a bit paranoid to me , I have never had a problem myself and if someone has done it sneakily then there is a warning light on the dash to tell you that it is not latched correctly.

              Nightmare!

I have had a look and unfortunately their is not clearance to put a locking pin in.

I have had an idea though

The release mechnism is similar to how a motorcycle seat operates which uses a key.

If you could get hold of one from a scrappy with a key then it might be possible to change the handle for the key operated one.
