  • Clutch/ Gear problems

    Hi all

Pulling up at the lights in my manual truck, I push the clutch, keep it pressed and push the brakes. I stop at the lights and lift off the brakes , clutch still pressed down and now in 2nd. as I come off the brakes he truck starts moving forward ...truck is in gear even though the pedal is pressed down.

Whats going on....truck also sticks in gear and now also wont at times go in gear when stopped and wont come out of gear at times

    any help appreciated

    Thanks

I've never seen the manual so it was part question....but if it was hydralic then just like a brake master cylinder the rubber seals in the clutch cylinder can leak (it may have more than one cylinder, my Vitara had a master and slave) and give you less pressure and travel when you press the pedal, so the clutch doesn't move all the way to fully disengage...

Does it work better if you pump the clutch a few times?
Have you tried changing the fluid?
What colour is the fluid (assuming its hydraulic)?
        Any signs of leaks?

Ok sometimes I cant get it into gear so I have to use my foot to physically lift the clutch pedal off the floor maybe a couple of times or I have to turn the engine off and select the gear to get it in or out of the gear...###### annoying

Any clues of what to look for ....fluid levels are good color is dull

Is there anything obvious to do with my clutch problem here....

It's pretty unlikely you'll see an issue externally...if that was leaking the fluid level would drop. It's most likely that the clutch master cylinder can't generate propper pressure as it's internal seals leak, that or the slave cylinder leaks, but again you'd see that underneath the car I would imagine.

I'm assuming you know which is which? (no offense meant or anything, I've come across many people who would have no idea).

                Master cylinder

It's usually the master cylinder that's the problem. You can get seal repair kits but on mine it became quite pitted and the repair kit failed after a few days.

I would invest on a new master cylinder if it is at fault.

Could also be the slave cylinder which is mounted on the side of the gearbox.

I ended up having to replace both on mine for a similar problem.

Thanks for all the replies so far

SO it could be either the slave or master....how do I tell?

I can take both apart but what am I looking for ?

                    Thanks so far

                    Cheers

If its the slave cylinder on the bell housing you may see some signs of fluid leakage.

Pitting on the surfaces, wear to the seals....the colour of the fluid ...black fluid contains bits of rubber worn from the seals....

                          Hi Andy

Thanks for your help so far. I cant find a leak but have topped up the fluid it does look a little dirty, so I will see if I can spot a leak as I have cleaned around both slave and master.
                          Cheers

I'd be willing to bet the seals inside are the problem.....if you pull it apart grab some pics.
