  • Road manners of Cooper HT's

One of the "problems" reported by my kid Sis on her Surf SSRX '97 is "funny" steering ( you know what its like trying to get a definitive description of a problem/noise/anything...). I see the service history shows a new steering rack, track rod ends, steering bushes etc etc, the tyres were a bit low at 28 psi all round ( they are now 30 front, 35 rear) but I still find the car following ruts and seams in the road, not alarmingly so but noticeably.
The tyres are Coopers, highway terrain tread on three wheels and for the forth wheel I have swapped over the Cooper AT tyre for a cheapo she had as a spare, but is also Highway terrain tread similar to the Coopers ( on a rear)

So... I can still feel the car following these road irregularities... Is it a normal feature of Coopers ? Is there anything else I can check or change or even change back?

As usual any advice or personal experience would be much appreciated...

Start with the easy stuff first.

    What are the tyres condition?

Do you have scuffing or uneven tread wear?
    Tread depth?

All of those are visual checks.

You mention track rod ends but not tracking?

Tread depth is good and no sign of scuffing scrubbing...

I have not had tracking checked as i would expect that the garage that fitted the steering rack and rod ends would have done that and as i say the tyres dont show badly out of track signs, but it may be worth checking as you infer.

When they check the tracking get them to check the wheel bearings also.

For road use my tyres are run at 33 all round

Is that 33 cold or hot tyres ( ref the 4psi rule )

          And wheel bearings are good.

          Cheers
