Replacing Alternator Core

People have mentioned that you can replace the alternator core of a second gen with a larger output off of a transit.

Has anyone done this and is it worthwhile or does the surfs create enough juice for all the lights, fridges, pumps, winches you could need?

I seem to remember one of the NZ guys, replacing his with one from a landcruiser?
Would be a lot less bother.

Here you go.... You will have to fabricate a longer adjustable arm for tightening the belt.
