Check all the electrical connections are secure on the pump.

Does the RPM gauge work when the engine is running?

no, just top of new o ring and gasket, also a fuel knock when revd, sounds horrible.

White smoke is air in the fuel and black smoke is unburnt fuel. If both are happening then something has been disturbed or not put back together correctly, either way the top needs to come off the pump again to check I'm afraid.
