OBDII socket/paperclip

I've got a 1995 gen2 3.0l kzn130 can you read the error codes via a scanner ie OBDII or is it only by using a paper clip/wire?

Pre '96 vehicles are OBD1.
You can get code readers for OBD1, but they only tell you the same info that you can get via the paperclip method to be honest.
