Joining the Crack-Heads

Hi Guys. Happy New Year!

Bought my 94' 3.0 about 4 weeks ago. Bought it to be the reliable truck.

Unfortunatly on new years eve I was welcomed to the cracked head club. B@@ger!!

Looking for an opinion from thoose that have been down this road. Do I pay for say the RoughTrax complete new head? Is there a vast upgrade over a recconned unit at half the price? What did most folk opt for?

Is there any other options?

Hi Nick n Happy New Year to ya to.
Looks like ya may have been missed unfortunately, not been down the Head route meself but plenty have and some of their experiences are on the Forum do a search or (some are at the foot of the page) if ya care to scroll down ....
As ya already suggested a Roughtrax built up Head assembly generally seem order of the day although one or two have tried Milner's heads .... or Stevo Heads ....

Not good news from Eblag n the like !!

Yeah after a few days of hunting about and reading other peoples thoughts on the subject I think the AMC heads from Roughtrax are the best bet. Good quality kit used to rebuild them too...

Think I'll be placing my order either tonight or tomorrow in order to have my truck on the road for the weekend.

It's not a name and shame I'm after bud. Its just one of those unlucky coincidences I'm afraid, bad timing if you know what I mean.

The truck ran 100% the weeks I have owned it. I had spend 2 hours looking at it.... Its Carried tools, firewood and towed a mates van all without fault. It was probably just brought to light as did over 1000KM over the course of 3 weeks.... lol Don't think it had been worked to hard for a long time either.

Will post a pic up soon however. Just ordered the new AMC head's from Roughtrax. So should have her rolling again by the weekend with fingers crossed.

I got a roughtrax head when mine went, great customer service, they phoned me to let me know I'd left some parts attached to my old head when I sent it back to them and sent them back to me when I realised I needed them

I don't think Yoshie was looking to name n shame anybody ...
it's not an unusual a request on this Forum.
It's all in the name of hignsight, love for these Trucks n the extra mile most of us go to help with some background !!

Got the wrong end if the stick I think.

Will get some pics up if the truck at the weekend after the new heads have been fitted. Apart from its head mishap don't get me wrong there. I love the beast.

Yeah, very happy with it. It came well packaged with clear and concise instructions for tightening the head bolts in the right order. Runs well after having replaced everything and removing the EGR system. I'd recommend the roughtrax head

Whats the story with the EGR system. Why remove it bud?

The EGR system is designed to recirculate the Exhaust Gases back into the engine to reduce emissions kicked out the exhaust tailpipe. It works well, but makes the engine run hotter and clogs the engine up with crap. On something the age of the Surf the EGR system isn't required for MOT purposes, by removing it altogether or blanking it off, it helps the engine run cooler and better.

Aaah sounds interesting and certainly benfital to the general health of the truck. Will do a wee search to see if there is a thread on doing it.

There's loads of threads on it, very straight forward to do. Two choices as well, either blank it off or remove it completely. I chose to remove it completely as it also tidies up the engine bay slightly and gives more space at the back of the engine on a 2.4TD.

I made two blanking plates from stainless steel to cover the holes left by removing the pipework. The threads on here show how to blank it off as well as which pipe work to remove, some members make the blanking plates for sale if you don't have the ability to make your own.

Although I would agree that the system is so crude that at the age of our trucks it is probably doing more harm than good with the build up of soot!
FYI The 3.0 4 runner is not fitted with the EGR at all.
