Insulation is the way forward I think too.
When I extended my garage (prefab concrete panels) I insulated the walls
and roof with 3" polystyrene sheets, plasterboard, taped joints and then
    painted, also double glazed windows.
There is a space heater in there but I haven't needed it yet, -1 a couple
    of weeks ago too.
    Still on a mission.

Fanks Gra I got all excited then saw the bit about postage

Blagged one off eBay less than £15

Garage will be insulated, using Airtec foil, apparently the same insulation value as 55mm of polystyrene......

        UPDATE

With the portable air con unit it has raised the garage temperature from 8' to 13' in under 30 mins
Will see how effective it is when it gets really cold....
